Who this pathway suits

For commercial pilots developing towards IFR airline or charter roles, and private pilots seeking more travel options when VFR conditions are unsuitable. We review your licence, experience and intended operations to plan the instrument rating and endorsements relevant to your goals.

Inside the course

What you work on

01

Instrument control and scan

Develop aircraft control by reference to instruments, a disciplined scan and workload management that leaves room for sound decisions.

02

IFR planning and navigation

Bring weather assessment, route preparation, instrument navigation and radio procedures together for the IFR operations you are preparing to conduct.

03

Departures and approaches

Work through departures, holding, instrument approaches and missed approaches within the agreed training scope and applicable minima.

What this prepares you for

After meeting the applicable licence, IREX theory, experience, training and flight test requirements, the Instrument Rating supports IFR flying within your licence and endorsements. Aircraft capability, weather minima and currency still apply; a multi-engine instrument endorsement is not automatic.

How training is planned

A starting point, a practical plan, and regular conversations about your progress.

  1. 1

Review your current licence and flight experience with our team, including the intended scope of instrument training.

  2. 2

Discuss the relevant IREX theory pathway and any preparation needed before practical training.

  3. 3

Agree on a training plan and suitable aircraft arrangements before confirming hours, fees and scheduling.

  4. 4

Use instructor feedback to review instrument handling, navigation and procedural preparation throughout the plan.

Costs and next steps

Hours, fees and delivery arrangements must be confirmed with our team after reviewing your experience and intended scope. The general aircraft rate table is not a quoted Instrument Rating course price. Ask for a specific training plan before committing.

Instrument Rating or PIFR?

PIFR is a separate private instrument pathway with its own theory and endorsement planning. Compare the operations you intend to undertake with our team before deciding which pathway fits your goals.

Compare Private Instrument Flight Rating training

IFR is not all-weather clearance. Aircraft capability, minima, endorsements, currency and operating limits remain essential; multi-engine IFR requires the appropriate qualifications.

Your questions, answered

Is this the same course as PIFR?

No. Instrument Rating and PIFR are distinct pathways. Our team will discuss your intended operations and explain the relevant theory, scope and endorsement planning.

What do I need before practical training?

Ask our team to review your licence, experience and IREX theory pathway. Entry and preparation requirements should be confirmed for your circumstances before scheduling.

Does an instrument rating allow flight in any weather?

No. Applicable weather minima, aircraft capability, rating privileges and operating limitations still apply. Discuss the limits relevant to your intended flying with our team.
